Fuel Cost Calculator

Estimate how much fuel you'll need and what it will cost for any trip, based on distance, your vehicle's fuel efficiency, and the current fuel price.

What Your Result Means

Fuel needed shows how many gallons (or liters) your trip will require. Trip fuel cost multiplies that by your entered fuel price for a total dollar estimate - handy for budgeting road trips or comparing vehicles.

How It Is Calculated

Imperial: Fuel Needed = Distance / MPG

Metric: Fuel Needed = (Distance / 100) × L/100km

Worked Example

A 300-mile trip in a car that gets 28 MPG, with gas at $3.50/gallon, needs about 10.7 gallons of fuel, costing roughly $37.50.

Important Assumptions

  • Assumes steady, average fuel efficiency - actual mileage varies with driving conditions, speed, and load.
  • Does not include tolls or other trip costs beyond fuel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I find my car's MPG?
Check your vehicle's manual, the window sticker (for new cars), or calculate it yourself by dividing miles driven by gallons used over a few fill-ups.
