What Your Result Means

Balance at retirement projects your total 401(k) value based on your ongoing contributions, employer match, investment returns, and salary growth. It breaks out how much came from your own paycheck contributions versus your employer's matching funds.

How It Is Calculated

Employer Match = Salary × min(Your %, Match Limit %) × Match Rate

Each year: Balance = (Balance + Your Contribution + Match) × (1 + Return Rate)

Worked Example

On a $70,000 salary contributing 8% with a 50% employer match up to 6%, growing at 7% annually for 25 years with 2% yearly raises, projects to roughly $580,000 at retirement.

Important Assumptions

  • Employer match is typically capped - check your plan's specific match formula and limit.
  • Doesn't account for annual IRS contribution limits, which change periodically and cap how much you can contribute.

Frequently Asked Questions

Am I leaving money on the table if I contribute less than the match limit?
Yes - if your employer matches up to 6% of salary and you contribute less than 6%, you're missing out on free employer money. Most financial advisors recommend contributing at least enough to get the full match.
